Kildare has had a “lucky escape” from the Pork debacle, according to the IFA.
With no known piggeries in the county using or having used the dodgy feed, it would seem Kildare pork should be in the clear, as is the case with beef.
“There’s probably about 2,500 sows in Co Kildare,” which create about €5 million in revenue each year locally, says David Egar, IFA County Chairman for Kildare.
However, Egar says the farming body is anxious to get things moving again as money is being lost by the day as a result of the temporary ban on pork products. This, and the fact that 800 employees were left go temporarily at a plant in Edenderry this week due to the ban.
“We need to start slaughtering again. There’s no reason why this shouldn’t start in Kildare,” David says.
