END OF THE ROAD

A sweeping wind of emotion swept through the bowels of Station Road last Friday night as Kildare County crashed out of the Eircom League following defeat to Mervue United in their promotion/relegation play-off.
The Thoroughbreds fell to a shocking 3-0 defeat at home to their Galway opponents and now face an uncertain future as they prepare for life outside the Eircom League.
County can have few complaints.
They finished cut adrift at the bottom of Division One, and having done the hard work on salvaging a 2-2 draw in the first leg against Mervue last Tuesday, they completely capitulated on Friday night in front of a hugely disappointed home faithful.
The defeat brings to an end Kildare County’s seven-year stint in the league, having joined its ranks back in 2002.
County’s best finish in the division was fourth place in 2004 when they finished on a credible 62 points.
Following the defeat to Mervue on Friday General Manager Michael Casey commented:
“This is not a time to make sweeping statements about the future direction of the club. The board will sit down and look at all the options but I can assure that the club will continue to operate at the highest level available to us and to pursue our strategy of developing young local talent.”
