Gardai are investigating the cause of a fire that burnt part of a warehouse to the ground.

The blaze brokeout at Heffernan’s Building Supplies on Friday evening at approximately 5.50pm in Kildare Town.

A passerby alerted the gardai to the fire. They arrived on the scene with fire units from Monasterevin within minutes. They forced their way into the yard and back up from Naas and Newbridge fire stations arrived to assist in quenching the flames.

There were six units with water tankers and it took two hours to get the inferno under control. Fire services stayed on the scene to dampen down the area for several hours.

Gardai said: “There was considerable damage done to one section of the warehouse and smoke damage to other areas. We are awaiting the results of a technical examination. There was a canteen close to where the blaze started and a lot of investigations were carried out here. There is nothing to suggest it was malicious.”
