Gardai in Athy are investigating two savage assaults in the town over the weekend which left one man hospitalised following an assault with a broken bottle.
In a weekend of violence, the town was hit with two separate attacks as gardaí were called to deal with Saturday night incidents.
The first assault took place at 9.30pm on Saturday night in the Clonmullion area of Athy when two local youths attacked a polish man, beating him with a lump of wood. The victim received facial injuries during the assault.
Later at 3.30am on Duke Street, Athy a local man was assaulted and stabbed with a broken bottle. His injuries required surgery and he was transferred to Tallaght Hospital where he was treated.
Sgt. Jim Bergin of Athy Garda Station told the Kildare Post this week that both assaults were currently being investigated and that gardaí were confident of arrests in both.
“We are following a definite line of enquiry in both cases and we believe that arrests are immanent,” he said.
Anyone with any information on either of the assaults can contact the gardaí at Athy Garda Station on 059 8634210.
