Road Deaths Down

Posted online: Jun 6th, 2007

The number of fatal traffic accident’s has been slashed by 60 per cent in the Kildare/Carlow division so far this year.
13 people died as a result of ten road accidents from January to June last year compared to just four in 2007. The news comes after a major crack down on drink driving swung into action over the bank holiday weekend. Over 200 check points
were rolled out across Kildare, West Wicklow and Carlow as part of the gardai’s ongoing road safety campaign. 13 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving as a result of random breath testing checks and regular patrols.
Gardai are warning motorists they will continue their clamp down on driving offences. They are warning drivers to be vigilant. Two of this year’s
road fatalities occurred on the motorway. Gardai are advising people to take care on all roads back roads and motorways.
“I would urge people to abide by the laws of speeding, drink driving and wearing a seatbelt.
This will save lives and road deaths will be prevented. If you drink and drive there will be a high risk that you will be caught,” warned Sgt Michael Keavens, Sgt in charge of the Division’s Traffic Core at Naas Garda Station.
